Attempt by a faction of the Turkey military to topple the country’s democratically elected government appears to be failing. Many of the coup members were seen on live television as they were being led away by armed policemen after their arrest. Earlier, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had called on Turks, including law enforcement agents, to take to the streets to show their support. The Associated Press reports top Turkish officials as claiming that “the coup attempt has been unsuccessful.”
In an interview over Face Time with the CNN Turk station, President Erdogan dismissed the military action as “an attempt at an uprising by a minority within our armed forces.”
Events continue to unfold as both the coup leaders and Erdogan are locked in a death struggle for power. Meanwhile, Reuters reports that the president “plans to ‘clean up’ the army” once he has reestablished order and peace. For more on the subject, read.
